The photo was taken in the Masoala Rainforest, a little piece of forest in Zurich Zoo where you can walk through Madagascar plants and see animals like lemurs, birds or geckos all around you. I saw this lovely chameleon just along my pathway.Time
It was an afternoon on July 10, 2013 at 3:00 PM.Lighting
There were many plants around my subject that filtered the sunlight, so even if it was in the middle of the afternoon the light was very soft and it allowed me to see every detail on the chameleon skin.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 5D mark III with a 100mm macro lens f/2.8.Inspiration
To be honest this shot wasn’t planned… I really love portraits, especially of animals, so the visit to the zoo was a good opportunity to test my new macro lens. This beautiful chameleon was climbing a tree next to me, so I tried my best to take a detailed portrait before it went away.Editing
Yes I did, I “cleaned” skin colors because in the original image they were greener (because of reflection of trees around my subject). In my camera bag
I always pack my Canon 5D mark III, my Canon 100 mm f/2.8 and 24-70 mm f/2.8. Then I pack my Lastolite reflector if I need to light up the face of my subject, when I use it the light is softer and eyes are brighter.Feedback
When you photograph animals in nature you need to be prepared. If you have the luck to see an animal in its habitat, usually it’s just for a few seconds or minutes so you need to be ready to take your shot. While you are waiting to see one of them you can set your camera and… be patient. There are no guaranteed results, but it can be a great adventure anyway!
