Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the wonderful Brick Bay Sculpture Trail which is in Snells Beach, north of Auckland. It's a wonderful treasure trove of modern sculpture nestled amongst native New Zealand bush and birdlife. I took myself up there one Summers day and took so many shots. A marvelous spot.

Time

It was early afternoon, around 3pm. The Summer sun had lost a bit of it's fierceness and was starting to create lovely shadows. I love this time of day when the 'glow' sets in. Luckily I was alone as I wanted to take my time. I was able to just sit, wait while the tui birds sang above me. I love those 'no rush' moments.

Lighting

I love the shadows and light on the curves. It makes your eyes follow the shape of the sculpture.

Equipment

I took this on my Canon 1200D. With my 18-55 lens. Not a high end camera but I love her all the same. As a starter photographer it has been a wonderful camera to learn on and I love taking it out for a drive. Funny how your never alone with a camera.

Inspiration

I came around a corner and there was this huge, round, white baby. It was so confronting sitting there on a park bench. I knew the contours would look amazing in a photo. I remember being excited about the photos as they were unlike any of my previous work.

Editing

I played around a bit with black and white but in the end loved these greenish, rusty tone. The original was so stark white that I felt that I was contributing to the Art of the sculpture.

In my camera bag

I'm a starter so I am just on the basic tools right now. have my trusty Canon 1200D and the 18-55 lens. My tripod. Spare SD cards and a battery are a must as the worst thing is running out of MBs or power. We've all been there! I also have a 70-200 Sigma lens which I love. My bag goes everywhere with me, you know, just in case....

Feedback

Move around your subject and try different angles. Get in close and personal. The beauty of this sculpture trail is it's proximity to nature. A beautiful backdrop. It provided lovely russet tones in the bokeh. Take your time and enjoy the moment, the way you feel is reflected in your images.
