Location
This photo was taken on Fire Island, a small island off the southern coast of Long Island, New York. It took me a while to get the right settings, but when I did I knew it’d be a winning shot.Time
I remember this day was especially cloudy, and my expectations for the sunset were low. But walking down the boardwalk over to the bay as the brilliant colors filled the horizon, I could immediately see that I was wrong. That day was was particularly windy and cold for summer, but the beautiful sunset made up for it. This image was taken on June 11, at 8:13 PM.Lighting
I’ve always loved golden hour lighting and the way the sun reflects on the water and clouds. The boat is silhouetted against the sky, yet some detail is still seen from light bouncing off the water. This image, in particular, is special because of the way the sun paints the whole landscape with pink and purple hues.Equipment
This image was shot using only a Canon 70D, with a 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.Inspiration
I had gone down to the dock to watch the sunset and take pictures like I did every day, but did not plan too far in advance. Compelled by the beauty of the landscape, I captured it in a spontaneous photograph. I love how the boat in the image looked so solitary and stark, and the way it pointed in the direction of the sunset’s vivid reflection on the water.Editing
All processing on this image was minimal. I corrected and adjusted the intensity of shadows, mid tones, and highlights with a levels adjustment layer. Then I used a curves adjustment layer to enhance tones in the image. In my camera bag
I still consider myself an amateur photographer and feel no need to carry with me anything more than my Canon 70D and 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. It is the only lens I own but by far my favorite!Feedback
My number one piece of advice would be to have patience and wait for the right conditions. You may think to shoot on a clearer day, but don’t let the weather prevent you from getting a good shot. It’s also especially important with sunsets to look out for nice compositions and silhouettes that will take your image from good to great.
