Location
This photo was taken in the Central District on Hong Kong Island, and it seems as though this location is both popular and familiar among locals.Time
I was really pleased with this image once I completed it. I had seen the image around different photo websites and I knew when I visited Hong Kong I had to try my hand at it. I ventured out in the evening with only a vague idea of the actual location itself. I wandered around for an hour or so before finding the location around 9:30pm when the city lights were still illuminated. It was really cool to see the pictures of this location really come to life as soon as I found the spot on the pedestrian bridge.Lighting
I tried several different exposures in order to get some nice streaks from the car lights. The light from the buildings also had to be correct so in composing several exposures I had to maintain balance while also getting some of the clouds in the sky. Despite wanting a bit more illumination in the sky I think the image turned out quite nice using light and motion.Equipment
I took this photo with my Sony a7RII with the 10-18mm f/4 wide angle lens attached. I attached all this to my Promaster ball-head tripod while using the Sony remote trigger to avoid shake.Inspiration
I had seen this photo several times floating across different photo websites when searching for photos from Hong Kong. I only went to Hong Kong for the first time a few months ago and knew that there were many places, including this one, that I wanted to visit and shoot some photos. I was excited to try my hand at this location because I have always found it to be very awe-inspiring every time it pops up. The movement and different angles really drew me into the image and inspired me to make it mine.Editing
I had a good idea what sort of post-processing I was going to do before taking this image, and it was a bit less labor-intensive than I anticipated. I layered the photos using the "lighten" feature in Photoshop then proceeded to copy, move, and trim the car lights to make them more dense. Overall, the post-processing wasn't too extensive. In my camera bag
In my Canon backpack adorned with flag patches from every country I have visited I carry my camera, all four of my lenses along with the essential accessories I may need on any outing. I always have a minimum of 2-4 batteries fully charged, several cloths for wiping my lenses, charger, and a pen and paper just in case I need to take notes, or in the rare case that my phone is dead, I can scribe the information of anyone I meet while traveling. Of course, I also have a strap on the outside for my tripod in case I will need it whenever I am out and about. Don't forget the memory cards! I always carry 2-3 memory cards just in case I fill one or happen to leave one at home plugged into my computer for editing.Feedback
Just keep trying new things and always continue to expand your skills and techniques. I am constantly learning new techniques, getting good at them, then moving on to find something new to learn. Every failure is a learning experience, every success is a step in the right direction. Get better and better and never give up on yourself.
