Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on South Bass Island otherwise known as Put In Bay at the Butterfly House.

Time

The Butterfly House, is a greenhouse type building, so there is a lot of natural light. It was taken mid-afternoon, but because there were many plants and flowers the light was not too severe. Contrasting colors and interesting lines were needed to make this shot interesting. So, I found the purple flower, and waited. It only took a few shots to get it right.

Lighting

Not exactly about the light, but I am always looking for unwanted visitors in my photographs. The background here was fairly ugly, so I made sure to have the appropriate blur, to make it more interesting.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mark lll, using my 24-105 lens. No tripod was used, so that I could get the proper angle.

Inspiration

Flowers are always a beautiful subject matter and when you add a butterfly your image is even more interesting.

Editing

I am not big on doing a lot of post processing, so I used Cole's lightroom preset, Clean and Crisp directly on the butterfly.

In my camera bag

I love my Canon 70 - 200 lens. Also I love my Hoodman Loupe. It is perfect for looking at what I have just shot, especially if I am out in bright sunlight.

Feedback

Really look at what you are trying to capture. Move around and check your angles. Take your time but don't miss your shot.
