Behind The Lens

Location

Okhla Bird Sanctuary, commonly known as OBS is Delhi’s own bird sanctuary and is a home for more than 300 bird species. The Okhla barrage is touched by the Yamuna River and hence it’s an ideal place for many water birds.

Time

Being a nature photographer and resident of Delhi I am a regular visitor of OBS. For this shot, I entered the birding spot around 5.30 Pm and since it was March, the sanctuary was covered with the golden light all over. The background in this picture is dark as the long dry grass was burnt by the park authorities. The birds are known to give many expressions and in this picture the framed bird is known as the Pied Bushchat, female and she seems to be questioning me “Why you’re here?”

Lighting

The lighting was very much favorable due to summer season. The friendly bird was perched mere few feet away from me and posed differently like a model for approximately 5-7 minutes.

Equipment

This was shot using my favorite gear Nikon D810 with Tamron 150-600 mm lens and using manfreto monopad.

Inspiration

It's dream of almost every nature Photographer to capture similar shot. Bird photography requires lot of patience and sincerity. Birding in-fact is one of the toughest genres of photography as if you will hurry up you will miss the dream shot and if you won’t have patience the winged friend will fly away. Overall I am very happy to capture this little one in some fine poses.

Editing

Yes, the shot was originally taken in RAW format and technically post processing was done, which is an integral part of photography. Even the jpg output also a processed that done automatically in camera. I fixed some WB, removed noises, and fixed lighting to make it look better.

In my camera bag

Nikon D810 is my favorite gear. The results are excellent in low light conditions. Not much noise compared to other cameras. Along with this I carry Tamron 150-600 mm lens. I also carry Nikkor 105 mm for macro photography. Recently added a tripod. You never know when a particular lens can help you out.

Feedback

One should have patience while doing wildlife photography. Chasing or disturbing wild animals or birds to capture a shot is definitely not recommended. Try mastering their body languages and try to communicate with them. When one learn this he/she eventually becomes much better photographer and nature enthusiast. For this shot I didn't stopped immediately instead slowly approached to her. When saw it didn't scared to me then stopped to take shots. Always be prepared and keep your gears ready. Check the camera settings and the lightning conditions before entering the forest. Take few sample shots so you know what camera demands. Increase or fix ISO sensitivity to auto at a max of 3200. Make sure check what max ISO support your camera that produces better result. Manual or Aperture mode depends on the subject. You won't get time to change your camera settings at the spots. You won't know when bird will come and fly away without giving you chance to take nice frame. So be prepared before they disappear. I used manual mode and auto ISO to 3200. My camera supports multiple presets, so I saved those as "low light", "Birding", "Moderate" etc. all these settings are different speed, ISO etc. For example in case of low light for birding, the preference are high iso at 3200, with min shutter speed 500, In case of "moderate" max ISO are 1600 and min shutter speeds are 100.
