Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in foggy morning in deep forest and national park of India named "Jim Corbett National Park".

Time

As usual visited this national park for a safari in the early morning in winter. with dense fog with almost zero visibility. Got a call this area and found we're (4 in a gypse and 1 driver, 1 Guide) along with few other visitors in between the fogs. Sun is rising and rays appears like this. Forget to capture and cats and without missing start to shoot in various angles using my D5300 and Tamron 15-30 mm lens on 3rd days of safari in 23rd December, 2017 at exactly 8:07:09 AM.

Lighting

It's winter season with dense fog in morning. Seems white cotton blanket spread by nature all over the hilly forest area. One can see this visual from top of hills. Lighting is very low due to the dense fog but there was drama of lights and fog creased streak sun rays. What I want to capture is all in focus. So I used low aperture at f/9.0 and used a shutter speed of 1/40, iso 200. As the lens is very good vibration it can easy go to this shutter speed. But I forget whether I used handheld of used tripod. Might be used tripod as I carry it at that time.

Equipment

It's one my favorite shot, as I always mesmerized with sun, rays, dusk. This shot was taken with my D5300 with Tamron 15-30 mm lens. Usually no one carry a wide angle lens for wild life safari. But I know this park is full of surprises, a mesmerized landscape, so carry this wide angle lens along with tripod and polarize/nd filters.

Inspiration

I along with my friends used to wildlife safari to capture moments of big cats and other wild animals. So visited Jim Corbett to capture various moments of cats, birds, deer and other various species. But in my mind, other than species I would like to capture landscapes as well. I know there area surprises in this forest and don't want to missed those scenes.

Editing

As a photographer I believe no photographs without post processing whether in camera or in PP application. Usually in landscape photography need lot of post processing, here I did it little bit to add flavor to this photo using lightroom and creates 2-3 variation other that B&W. I mostly like B&W and this photo.

In my camera bag

I do various genre of photography from wildlife to landscape, to commercial photography, wedding & fashion etc. Hence carry the gears based on my shooting program. Generally carry my all rounder lens 24-70 mm f/2.8 along with Nikkor 85 mm F/1.8. Added new gears Nikon Z6_II now. A mirrorless camera with able to capture in low light. Recently taken shot in evening after sunset and found this gear able to capture the subject. Not to say didn't find noises.

Feedback

One should have patience while doing wildlife photography. Chasing or disturbing wild animals to capture a shot is definitely not recommended. Try mastering their body languages and try to communicate with them. When one learn this he/she eventually becomes much better photographer and nature enthusiast. For this shot my fellow photographers are not prepared to get such lighting (might be). They usually carry telephoto lenses for a wildlife safari, usually this required. One need to study where you go, what are the surprises you might get in the location at spot. No one can pre planned those moments. You only need to prepare. Telephoto lenses is not suitable to get such wide area unless you're far away and cropped the image. Study before going this forest and know there plenty of surprises such as landscape moments, other than wild animals, so carry a wide angle lens. I've 2 bodies. One that D810 using telephoto lens and in D5300 is with Tamron 15-30 mm. You don't time to change lenses in the spot as there are 2 reason which is not friendly to camera sensor. One is water (mist) and second is dust. To avoid I carry 2 bodies. I used manual mode and changes exposure setting accordingly to lights.
