Location
This photo was taken at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen, MN. I made a trip there one day specifically to shoot the tulips which were blooming at the time, but I found more inspiration in the ferns because they reminded me of the ones that grew at my childhood home in Grand Marais, MN.Time
I shot this photo in the early afternoon after having walked miles around the Arboretum in the 90+ degree weather.Lighting
Ferns don't like direct sunlight so I was very pleasantly surprised to get a shot with this level of vibrance to the colors. There were purple flowers behind them which highlighted the reddish/purple tips on the fern fronds and indirect sunlight peeking through the surrounding trees.Equipment
I used a handheld Nikon D7100 with the stock 18-105mm lens and natural light. It is my first professional camera and it will take me a lifetime to fully understand all its capabilities, but I'm enjoying it thoroughly!Inspiration
I have always loved the curves and sensual shape of the fiddle head ferns. This picture captured the way I see ferns perfectly. The tightly curled head and the feathery leaves brings to mind the beauty of a burlesque dancer teasing their audience.Editing
In this instance the only processing of the photo was boosting the vibrance to really make the colors pop.In my camera bag
I am an amateur photographer just starting out with anything more than a point & shoot camera so at this point I don't carry anything with me more than my camera, my imagination and my love of photography.Feedback
My only advice is to take pictures....lots of pictures! Try anything and everything. There are a million books, classes, people willing to tell you what makes great pictures and how to take them, but the thing I love about photography is there are no rules. Lay on the ground, climb the tree, shoot into the sun, use the "wrong" settings, have fun, be different, break the rules! Find what works for you.
