Location
this photo was taken on Montrose Beach, Angus, Scotland after the tide had gone outTime
It was between 1.30am and 3am on the 13th May 2015. It was a cold morning with little wind.Lighting
It was meant to be a clear night but the cloud arrived just after setting up, however the clouds added a bit of background movement enhancing what in the first few frames was just too many stars. As most of the light would come from the burning wirewool I ensured that the area in fount of the camera had tide ripples with water trapped to reflect the burning wire wool.Equipment
Canon 70d, Samyang 10mm@F2.8, Manfrotto 055XPROB, £60 of Wirewool(of several grades) and bird feeders, Shutter timer & SAFETY GLASSES!!!!Inspiration
I had seen a lot of the wirewool photography and wanted to give it a go but wanted to do something a little different.Editing
Post processing for this project was really easy, I had avoided anything in the background to make mirroring the images easier. The raw files were converted to tiff in PS. Once in PS, duplicate background layer and flip horizontally and set top layer to Blend Lighten and move top layer around till happy. then just add layer mask to block out any overlap. In my camera bag
Canon 70d, canon T5i, Canon 100-400mm L F4-5.6, Canon 24-105mm L F4, Speedlite 430exii, Samyang 10mm@F2.8 (@ Night) or Sigma 150mm Macro (@ daytime)Feedback
First a warning, hot metal burns, SAFETY GLASSES(it only takes one mistake) leather gloves and jacket are advised also a hoody (you don't want burning metal down your neck). Best tips are different grades of wirewool burn at different rates also if you compact it, it burns longer but with fewer sparks. The thicker the wirewool the harder it is to light and it produces less but large sparks
