Near the retreat where I stayed in Himachal Pradesh was a Rajastani encampment of migrant road workers. Apparently, genetic testing has determined that gypsies originated in the Rajastan area of India, and these people seem to be gypsies. I was immediately attracted to take photos of them. And they were very eager as well, demanding that I bring back prints, which I did. These are beautiful people, although some of the kid shots are heartbreaking. These comprise some of the best images that I have yet taken as a photographer.

I love the way she holds the child in this image. So graceful!

Behind The Lens

Location

Bhuntar, Himachal Pradesh, India

Time

3:30-4:00 pm

Lighting

The sun was behind the tent, which was behind the subject. It is all natural light.

Equipment

Sigma SD15 (Foveon sensor), 17-70mm lens.

Inspiration

This encampment of Rajasthani gypsies had people with such beautiful and unique faces. And they loved having their picture taken.

Editing

Slight sharpening. The foveon effect is like film. I don't need to do much.

Feedback

Natural light is best for getting such soft yet vivid colors. This camera / sensor struggles with low light, so I had to really know how to push it to its limits, without compromising the quality of the shot. The background (a tent canvass) was somewhat non-descript and therefore the viewer could focus on the faces rather than be distracted by anything going on behind the subject. This was an important element for a successful shot, and the bright yellow color actually contributed to a bit of an ethereal quality to the composition, although the grit and dirt on it also reminded us of the poverty such individuals experience.
