Behind The Lens

Location

I live in Matthews NC south of Charlotte and I was sitting in my backyard having a cup of coffee in the morning. Over the years I have planted Butterfly Bushes, Hosta, Rose of Sharon, and a few plants in pots such as Shrimp Plants, and Dahlias that humming birds and butterflies like.

Time

It was morning as the sun was topping trees in my backyard and the light is still soft.

Lighting

Timing is everything. The sun was coming up and the humming bird approached the bloom and I was able to have the sun shine to provide light.

Equipment

The photo was taken with a Nikon D5100 on a monopod. I was using the Nikon 300mm that came with the camera. The camera is slow to focus so I already had focused on the bloom. When the humming bird began approach the bloom I brought the camera slowly to my eye and started taking a few pictures.

Inspiration

I love flower blooms and birds and pictures of nature. Hummingbirds and butterflies are my favorites and I submitted a few pictures into Birds and Blooms and they were published.

Editing

I had Elements 10 my now have Light Room.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7200 camera - 200mm Tamron & 50mm Nikon

Feedback

Be Patient - watch the patterns of how birds feed and travel. Try to stay still as possible and if you're shooting with a cell phone - stop. If you're shooting on Auto - stop. Take a course at the Community College and good luck.
