My favorite sport and favorite position to take photographs. It requires a lot of physical ability. Take off the equipment and you're a pretty high school teenager taking challenging courses and making good grades. You won't find that in the news. Here's to all the girls that play sports and make the 'Dean's List'.

Behind The Lens

Location

My last year as a high school business teacher, I decided to start taking pictures of my students, make paper copies, and highlight them on my classroom door. The students loved it because it has truely become a lost art. The pictures were my gift to them, but they could take them off the door until Friday. One afternoon, the softball team was playing at home and my camera was in the car. I brought it out (Nikon D7200 w/ Tamron 200 sports lens) and started taking pictures of the girls warming up. I was amazed at how this sweet girl who had warn a pretty sun dress to school and could put on the catcher's equipment and become tough as nails.... These are country girls and they grow up doing this every summer. If you watch the reflex in their eyes and glove, you have about 1/2 second to take the picture. The same is true when they are batting. Watch the slightest movement and take the picture. Many times you will get the bat hitting the ball or them missing the ball and the catcher's mit fills the air with dust.

Time

Afternoon about 4PM in April. In NC that is usually a nice days with low humidity. Shutter speed was high, I think about 1000. To stop a baseball or softball it needs to be around 2000.

Lighting

During the day light is seldom a problem. Taking pictures inside a high school gym, alway a problem.

Equipment

Nikon D7200 w/ Tamron 200mm Sport Lens. Its fast.

Inspiration

The gift of giving students a paper copy of themselfs playing sports. I would always remind them to tape the pictures into the back of their school album when they got it at the end of the year. They loved the idea.

Editing

I did some, mostly just light. I'm sure I could have done more like brighten her face, but I liked it the way it was. That's why I named it 'Beauty Behind the Mask'. Her face was my focal point, even though the softball catches your eye.

In my camera bag

A 200mm Tamron, 50mm Nikon, gloves, windbreaker, extra batteries, flashlight, and some TP. I have a plan on what I want to shoot, but I can't tell you the number of times I have put on that windbreaker.

Feedback

Don't try it with a cell phone. Use a shutter speed around 1000. Watch you subject close... when they move - shoot
