When my friend asked me, "This may sound silly, but do you shoot animals?" I knew it was going to be a fun night. This is a photo of Karl the Iguana, beloved pet of a friend in Austin, TX.Time
It was around 11 p.m. and time for a late night snack for Karl. He was happily munching away on a selection of dandelions and just looked so pleased with himself, I couldn't resist a snap or two.Lighting
I'm really big on shooting with natural lighting. And by "natural" I don't mean manufactured to look natural, but whatever light is available in the situation. As a documentary photographer, I try not to mess too much with the actual atmosphere.Equipment
My trusty Nikon D7200 is always by my side, and generally in someone's face.Inspiration
I love to capture the personality of my subjects in a picture, and this is Karl through and through. I'm always looking to use my pictures as a way to either inform or put a smile on someone's face. Karl was just so full of personality and absolutely loved the lens.Editing
Post-processing varies greatly picture to picture, in this one it was merely an issue of punching up the colors to look as true to life as possible. He's a vibrant lizard, and the details on his snout were important for me to bring out.In my camera bag
I always carry my Nikon D7200 with my favorite AF Nikkor 50 mm lens, and a couple of backups with zoom. I also carry an LED video light, just in case, and some noise cancelling headphones for standing by speakers at concerts.Feedback
Don't be afraid to play with focus and depth of field. Experiment! Also, when you are specifically trying to capture the personality of your subject, make sure to shoot in places or situations that are significant to them. You'll find everyone is more relaxed when the subject feels like they are less on display and more in their element.
