Location
Rocky Mountain National Park....Grand Lake, CO. On the way to my "day" job actually :o)Time
It was early afternoon on a snowy day in late April, which is a little odd for Red fox as they are normally pretty much early morning and evening hunters. She (may be a he??) stuck around for 15-20 minutes and allowed me to get some incredible images...including this one.Lighting
Shooting on an overcast or snowy day is probably my favorite way to shoot other than the "magic" hours. The lighting is filtered through dense clouds and almost always provides a well lit portrait. This image was no different, the lighting ended up being gentle, but bright enough to light up the eyes.Equipment
This image was taken with a Canon 7D and the 70-200mm f4 IS L (a truly great lens!!) No flash was needed, nor tripod.Inspiration
I am ALWAYS looking for the opportunity to photograph wild animals...so when they cooperate, as this fox did, I take full advantage. What makes it one of my all-time favorites is the eyes locking on and of course the tongue sticking out...unique to me :o)Editing
I shoot everything in Canon RAW format, so post processing includes Levels, Saturation and some slight sharpening in Photoshop CC.In my camera bag
I carry the Canon 7D with the Canon 70-200mm f4 IS L lens and a 2x convertor. I have recently purchased a Sigma 50-500mm OS that I am enjoying also.Feedback
Being prepared....you hear it all the time, but it is really true. Your shooting conditions dictate your camera settings, first thing I do when leaving for the day is check settings (P mode, WB, etc.) may have to change them through out the day, but starting with them already set.....means I am ready should the opportunity arise :o) PLUS....certain times of the year, my camera goes EVERYWHERE I go....without fail.
