This photo was taken in the archipelago of the Lofoten Islands, a cluster of islands located off the northern coastline of Norway, inside the arctic circle.Time
As this location was inside the arctic circle and it happened to be during the Christmas holiday, the sun did not actually rise above the horizon. Instead, a twilight appears between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 13:00 p.m. This shot was around 10:30 a.m.Lighting
The lighting in the islands at this time of the year is unlike anything I have seen elsewhere. It was difficult as I only had a small window of time to chase the light all over these stunning landscapes. The air was crisp, clean and unpolluted. The sky also took on hues of colours I have not seen in other parts of the world. I was hoping to catch the wintery glow of the mountains as I prefer low light conditions and I was not disappointed. The only downside to this beautiful location is having to travel to multiple destinations along your route in hopes of catching the light you have worked hard to research and document ahead of time.Equipment
The reason for this trip was to try out a newly purchased Nikon D850 with my 14-24 mm wide angle lens. There was no other equipment used.Inspiration
I had spent some time, like other avid photography enthusiasts, researching locations for an upcoming holiday. I had never heard of the Lofoten Islands, but once I saw what other photographers were capturing, I was hooked. Once I was there, there seems to be a picture around every corner. As I was staying in the rental accommodation nearby, I found a moment during the morning where the water was still and took the shot. As it turns out, another photographer was on the deck beside me with the same idea in mind.Editing
I do most of my post-processing work in Lightroom. Basic whole image adjustments such as brightness and contrast, but no colour was modified here. This is what the arctic gave me. I provided additional vibrance to accentuate these colours. I used photoshop to add a subtle Orton effect to the scene and I used Nik software to reduce any additional noise. I also use a dodge and burn layer to accentuate some highlights and shadows.In my camera bag
As this was new equipment I was trying out, I took the new Nikon D810 with my 14-24mm Nikkor lens. I had no real intentions of very specific uses while I was there other than to sort out focusing issues. I have a stable Manfrotto tripod that goes everywhere with me, but other than that, I carry an extra battery, four or five memory cards, cleaning supplies and my laptop.Feedback
The Lofoten Islands are a dream for any photographer, any season of the year. However, remember that these islands are inside the arctic circle, and as such, during the winter months, receive very little light. This does have the added advantage of greater aurora activity if this is an interest to you. As well, advance planning is a must to ensure you capture every possible scene in the time that you do have. The islands are very beautiful, but with limited access to many of these spots, it can be difficult at times to get the shot you want. The summer months can be quite busy with new tourist traffic but during my time in December, I met just a handful of people on my travels. Many activities are seasonal and were closed during the holiday as are many of the hiking trails that left many of my top-down shots of the islands inaccessible. As with any trip planning is key for the most enjoyable experience. And be sure to book your stay in the quaint fishermen's cabins found all over the islands!
