Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a medieval town called Cesky Krumlov. It's located in the Czech Republic's South Bohemian Region. Construction of the town began in 1240 and included an unusually large castle (?eský Krumlov Castle). It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For me, as a self-taught, semi-professional photographer, it truly was a magical place to photograph.

Time

I was so pleased with this image. It captured many of the elements that I strive including simplicity. And, it was kind of a bonus moment because I did not expect to see a street musician this early in the day. The photo was shot at 9:02 AM on April 6th, 2016. At this time of the morning, the sun was being blocked by the village buildings. Throw in a good breeze along the streets and it made for a chilly, invigorating morning.

Lighting

At the right time of day, I absolutely love the natural lighting in these old villages. During the mornings, there is very little direct sunlight due to the winding, narrow village streets and the tall, old buildings. This creates plenty of even and indirect lighting. It also provides a nice touch of shadows that can add more emotion. I find that this type of lighting works particularly well for black and white photography.

Equipment

Canon EOS 5D Mark iii with an EF 70 - 200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens. No flash.

Inspiration

The morning of this shot, I was out early (5:30 AM) with my camera to capture this unique, medieval village and the great lighting that would present itself as the sun rose. By the time I came across this street musician, I thought I was just about going to be out of great lighting so the timing was perfect. And, by the way, I made sure to throw a very good tip into his flute case so that he wouldn't mind me snapping away with my camera.

Editing

There was very little post-processing on this photograph. It was really limited to a small crop adjustment, a bit of vignetting, and then, of course, converting to black and white.

In my camera bag

If I'm shooting video, I'll pack two of the Canon EOS 5D Mark iii. Great video camera, but equally wonderful for photography. Since I've been experimenting with long exposures, I'll also bring my: - MeFOTO A1350Q1T Aluminium Roadtrip Travel Tripod/Monopod Kit (Titanium) - And a miniature tripod when I want to travel light. These work exceptionally well when used correctly. My glass includes: - Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM lens - Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom lens - Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens Filters: - B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer with Multi-Resistant Coating - Lee Filters 77mm Big Stopper Kit I'm also wanting to get smarter at using off-camera flash because it's an amazing way to compliment ambient, natural lighting so I also pack a Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT along with remote triggers.

Feedback

For shots like this, the location or environment is key as is the time of day in order to get the right lighting. Look for great textures on the streets and walls. For this style of photography, I look for the indirect light. No harsh light. And I also look for a good amount of distance behind and in front of the subject so that I can gently blur the background and foreground.
