Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in the central mountainous area of Gran Canaria, a volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of North Africa. The area is called Montanon Negro and has thick pine forests criss crossed by narrow roads.

Time

My wife and I had been for a walk through the forest and up to a caldera with the dogs. After a couple of hours, and now being mid afternoon, we felt the coffee calling so went back down to the car. I saw this view up the road that we were about to drive down.

Lighting

No special effects needed - nature provided everything.

Equipment

Nikon D70 with a Nikon 18-70mm lens, which is my standard go-to one. The camera was hand held.

Inspiration

I didn't go hunting for this shot, I was in the right place at the right time, purely by chance. I simply spotted the potential as I walked down the mountain towards the car and headed off to have a look.

Editing

I will have tweaked the light and contrast a bit as the D70 always tended to shoot slightly on the dark side. Therefore, I wanted the image to reflect the bright sunny day that it actually was.

In my camera bag

My Nikon came with the Nikon 18-70mm lens and it's proved to be a fantastic lens. I still use it today as my standard lens on my Nikon D7200. I also have a Nikon 70-300mm zoom lens in my bag, alongside a 50mm macro lens. I also have a Nikon flash in the bag but can't remember the last time that I used it. Depending on where I'm going, I'll have a tripod (invariably carried by my trusty wife) or a monopod, although I'm not keen on the latter as I tend to find it swaying when I use it.
