I promised to the little kid of a good friend of mine to bring him a hippo picture, also to test myself with an assignment. While photographing elephants in the Khwai area of Botswana I remembered this on the last moment of the last day to get a chance of doing that. Rushing to a nearby waterhole I had a few minutes to position myself before nightfall at a low level to get the setting sun and a hippo popping up in one shot. Had to chance quite a few times from position and watch out for my safety as well.

Behind The Lens

Location

The Hippo pool at the Khwai river in the Khwai area of Botswana.

Time

Just a few minutes before the sun did disappear behind the horizon.

Lighting

Because I was in a hurry and had to react quickly due to split of a second movement of the animals with a lack of light the photo looks a bit unsharp. At the time of posting I had no lightroom as well.

Equipment

Canon eos 70D Lens EF 135mm 2.0 handheld no flash Apert. 2 Shutter 1/160

Inspiration

I promised the little boy of a good friend of mine to make a hippo picture for him also to test myself as a challenge. Whle i was busy photographing elephants along the Khwai river I forgot about the assignment until the last half hour of light that day that was the last day of my safari as well. While rushing with my guide to a nearby hippo pool I threw myself in te mud in front of the pool (don't do this without experience in the bush) I was just in time to take a few shots. The problem was the hippo's popped out of the pool very quick at several spots and I had to crawl from left toright and back to get the animals positioned well against the sun and taking care of my safety as well.

Editing

Hardly any, just color, brightness contrast with canon zoombrowser

In my camera bag

2 dslr's, telezoom lens, portrait lens, 2 wide angles, single pod, lots of batteries and cards, 2 gopro's

Feedback

Make use of a company/guide that is familiar with photography and great bush knowledge. Know your area and animals.
