Location
It was on the first day entering the Khwai concession in Botswana on one of my annual trips. That means you are extremely lucky or have skilled people around you.Time
As you can see on the orange glow on the leopard it was the start of sunset while we stayed quite some time to observe this leopard. Sunsets happen real quick in southern parts of Africa ( between 18.00 and 19.00 hrs) in October so you have to act quick to have golden light sometimes.Lighting
Some people thinkyou always have to have the light in your back to shoot quality pictures. Actually that is boring. For me most of my images are backlit and it really doesn't matter for me what way it is coming from or if the sun shines or not...every sort of light can be interesting as long as the subject is interesting.Equipment
Canon eos 70D, ..... EF300mm f4/L IS USM, ...Av 4.0,..... Tv 1/200,...... ISO 200.....handheld,..... no flash.Inspiration
With wildlife photography it is the years of trying and experience that counts to know how and what moment to push the shutter. Of course looking at work of other photographers will help but it is foremost the opportunity that occurs during your well chosen travel where time of place and year have a great influence on your subjects. A skilled guide and some knowledge of animal behaviour is a must.Editing
Some minor cropping, the usual brightness/contrast/color slider adjustments and a little sharpening was used in this image. In my camera bag
2 camera bodies telelens (fixed) portrait lens wide angle batteries memory cards gorillapod bean bag note: I am restricted to 8 kilos of gear due to air transportFeedback
do not think you are a wildlife photographer after one safari, it is a never ending learning process practising shooting birds is the best way of practice choose your lenses wisely always have your camera ready you really have to have a passion for this to keep on going there will be enough dissapointments
