The photo was taken in Tanzania during my safari. I'm absolutely in love with photography but am still an amateur and just try to take as many photos as I can in such beautiful situations, constantly fiddling with settings and different angles. This was taken on the way to my car after having lunch at a restaurant, I wasn't looking for photos to take and didn't realise it would turn out so well but I love absolutely love African sunsets!Time
This was taken on August 30 in 2015 in the afternoon, for the sunset. I was rushed to go to the car to continue on a safari from having lunch at a lodge but had to attempt to capturing the scene. This meant I had to balance my camera in the dirt and squat in order to get a nice, clear shot without having to take out my tripod and take too much time.Lighting
Though too much sun may have washed out the photo the trees nicely monitored it and two of the impalas were partially 'highlighted' by the sun's rays. I have been trying many sunset shots but here I was just lucky to get such a nice lighting set up without any interference on my part.Equipment
This was taken with a Panasonic DMC-G6 Lumix. I didn't use any flash, I really loved the natural lighting and was just counting on my camera to capture it and did not have the time to use a tripod. Also, being nearby a lodge the animals weren't skittish and were in fact quite close so I just used my 14-42 lens.Inspiration
I've been working on my animal photography for a long time, however mostly from a safe distance in a car. Recently I had been on a walk, camping in the bush not even with the flimsy walls of a tent at night and I came to appreciate all sorts of game, rather than just the big predators or giant elephants. This inspired me to take notice of even the most common impala, paired along with my love for such gorgeous African sunsets makes this photo one of my favourites.Editing
I didn't do any processing. I am eager to learn photography but do not have as much patience with editing/processing. However, luckily I was so happy with this photograph as it is and did not want to change a thing! In my camera bag
I of course have my Panasonic DMC-G6 Lumix and bring a 14-42 lens and a lens with a better zoom (45-150). I also carry my tripod and am sure to pack 2 fully charged batteries, often travelling without power for long periods of time and my charger just in case. If anything I need battery rather than all my fancy equipment (though hopefully I can afford new equipment soon). I'd rather take mediocre photos of an entire trip rather than a couple of winning photographs because first and foremost, I take pictures to remember these experiences.Feedback
Take as many photos as you can! It is a hassle to sort through but you should be feeling around for the best settings, angles, focus', etc. to know what you want in a shot. Especially with sunsets lighting can be very tricky. Also with animal photography, it's best to try taking photos from a car, though here I was on foot it was only my luck that the animals were skittish but usually they are intimidated by people on foot, whereas in a vehicle they do not often show much interest. Lastly, careful with the flash, instances like this with such beautiful natural light can easily be ruined by too much lighting, but again, see what works for you and your camera and fiddle!
