Location
I took this photo at Big Sky Resort, in Montana. My brother throws a freestyle ski and snowboard competition there each year, and now has me helping take photos of athletes and activities.Time
This shot was taken mid-afternoon, about midway through the competition.Lighting
The first half of the day, it was hard to get a shot without the sun being in the way. But later in the afternoon, it had just crept enough to the west that we were able to get shots of competitors from a better angle. I moved to just to the left of the jump and was able to get under the skier and take an angled shot with the background still in focus.Equipment
I had my Nikon D5300 camera with a Tamron 30-700mm lense, and UV filterInspiration
The competitors in these competitions range from 5-21 years old. Being able to get pictures of these kids for them to enjoy, and for parents to share with family and friends, makes taking them priceless.Editing
I used Picture Editor on my phone and created a Sephia color with HDR. This really brought out the drama in the picture. In my camera bag
I am still beginning, but my camera bag includes my Nikon D5300 with the 18-55mm lens. Also included are the Tamron 70-300mm lens, lens hoods and multiple filters. I also keep thin gloves and a hat, as I tend to shoot in cooler conditions, a waterproof cover and some sunscreen!!Feedback
You have to work the angles. Take a few shots from one side and move to the other. You have to really move around, as skiers and snowboards ride and perform differently. Also, if you are familiar with an athlete, ask them if they are comfortable with you in particular areas. You never want to be in the way, or create confusion during a competition.
