Outside the front door to my parent's house are two hanging flower baskets. Every year, one family of birds comes to nest in one of the flowering pots. One day while I was outside, I heard a lot of chirping coming from the bird bath. When I looked over, I saw this little guy taking a break from learning to fly. I ran inside and grabbed my camera to snag this picture.

Location
This photo was shot on the front patio of my parents home, only feet away from the birds nest.Time
Shot in the early morning, the birds (and myself) were still just waking up for the day. I walked outside with my coffee to hear light chirps coming from the bird bath. At first, I thought nothing of it and continued to walk. As I turned around with the morning paper in my hand, I saw a flash of yellow and decided to investigate further, finding this guy waiting for me on the bird bath rim.Lighting
I was unsure of how the colors of the birds feathers, beak and the surrounding environment would look with an overcast day. But due to a low depth of field in the background, it helped to highlight and enhance the features of the baby bird. After taking two shots, I boosted my ISO and turned down my f/stop in order to allow more light in. After waiting through three chirps, I captured him in the middle of his fourth with the lighting I wanted. After taking a total of five shots, I left this little guy in peace.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D7000 with a 70-300mm lens. No tripod, flash or other gadgets were used.Inspiration
Before this time, I had never gotten so close to a young bird. I always heard them in the trees but could never find them. When this little guy appeared on the bird bath and stayed for almost twenty minutes, it was my chance to get the photo I was hoping for.Editing
This photo has very light enhancements, including a slight boost to the overall contrast and a hint of saturation. Overall, this photo did not need much touching up.In my camera bag
This shot was taken when I was first delving into photography, so my bag contained only my D7000, my 18-105mm f/4 DX lens and my 70-300mm zoom. It is truly not the gear that defines the photographer or makes one photographer better than the other, it's how the individual uses the gear they have, in order to produce stellar images. Yes, fancy gear will make getting that perfect picture that much easier, but challenging yourself to produce images with one camera body and two lenses will help you to move away from being "gear hungry" to enjoying the technology you have and making the most of it.Feedback
Take the time to listen to the world around you. Go for a walk without your phone and your music, just you and your camera. Take the time to practice and push yourself to take lots of photos, even if they are not "award winning" in your mind. The best way to become a better photographer is to always be taking photos.
