Behind The Lens

Location

Every year the local Harley Owners Group in Fort Walton Beach, Florida holds a Toys for Tots motorcycle run that culminates at the Boggy Bayou Fair Grounds in Niceville, Florida. The event brings in lots of toys for needy children during the Christmas holiday. At the fair grounds there is live music, motorcycle skills demonstrations, food and drink, a best decorated motorcycle contest and lots of biker camaraderie. This event also draws many hot rods since there is a commonality between motorheads at events like this. This was one of the hot rods that showed up.

Time

This image was shot about 2pm.

Lighting

It was a little cloudy as many mid November days are down here. The car was parked in an almost perfect position that allowed the sun to be over my left shoulder and high enough that the shadows around the car were minimal. Other than that not much else with regard to the lighting.

Equipment

I was hand holding an Olympus E520 with a Zuiko Digital 14-45mm F3.5-5.6 lens. The focal length was at 36mm, f/8, 1/200 sec.

Inspiration

Looking at the way the light was angled, really made the car pop! The engine and paint job just made this car the epitome of what a hot rod is. It is a classic and I wanted to have the image in my portfolio.

Editing

Yes! The original is in color and for this contest I had to remove the color. I had already softened and removed the color in the background while experimenting with my software but this contest called for black and white so I removed the rest of the color from the car leaving the softened background to make the car stand out even in black and white.

In my camera bag

I have upgraded to a Nikon D810, with a AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR, AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED, AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G, and a SB-910.

Feedback

Always be looking! You never know when a photo op might be the "one". Sometimes the most mundane subject just might be the one that garners the most attention when viewed by your audience. It is nice to concentrate on one type of photography and master it but I have found that by shooting different types of subjects I am constantly improving my skills for what I hope will be my concentration as a nature photographer. While your hope may be to only photograph that which you are passionate about never pass up an opportunity to shoot outside that box!!
