This is what lightning looks like at eye level. I took this shot from the vestibule of my tent at over 11,000 feet in the highlands of Ethiopia. Beyond that grass is a massive cliff dropping into the lowlands where a storm was raging. My calm perch high above the maelstrom quickly turned into a chaotic wind tunnel as the thunderhead creeped up the mountainside and engulfed my camp. For a brief moment I was suddenly at the same altitude as the lightning strikes. Each thunderclap cracked and rumbled through my body and even with eyes closed I could see brilliant flashes of purple light. A terrifying, humbling, and mystifying night all at once.
