Location
This photo was taken on Hinnoya Island, outside of Harstad in northern Norway, in March of this year. I am an enthusiast aurora photographer having made several trips above the arctic circle. I am now getting pretty decent at it. :-)Time
The photo was taken at approximately 1am. While on these trips, I'll typically have a normal evening out that I would usually have anyway and then in the late evening I'll gather my equipment and head off. I have found the hours between 11-2am to be best in terms of solar activity and cloud cover so will normally stick to that.Lighting
Obviously, any photographer on the same shoot will be looking to find a location with as little light pollution as possible. This really is quite critical in terms of exposure and overall results of any photos. There are many operators in the northern locations that can bring you direct to prime locations. I personally however, have found that scouting locations in daylight hours and returning there at night is part of the draw in doing it, and it isn't very difficult to find sites.Equipment
This photo was taken with a tripod, Fuji X-T1 and 16mm prime lens - the best lens I have ever used.Inspiration
Well, I didn't actually know what it would look like until after I had taken it to be honest! I'll always look for similar shots over water if possible and try to give myself the best chance of spotting activity however it is a bit of a crap shoot really.Editing
The light and colours were enhanced slightly but not so much as to look artificial. The mountain in the middle ground were brightened as well to bring out the detail. In my camera bag
I used to use Canon kit but have since moved on to mirrorless and must say, I love my Fuji X-T1. Compact, awesome build quality and the lenses are amazing.Feedback
I have done 4 or 5 trips into the high arctic now and realised that much of what happens is simply not in my control. One trip I went and it rained or was under cloud the entire time. Now I watch the forecast and will only book a day or 2 before I travel, that would be my number 1 tip if you can do it. March and October are usually considered the best times but I also look at temperature and the colder the better as it keeps the cloud away. If conditions are good then you really just need to put yourself in the darkest possible spot and look up!
