Location
This photo was taken on the Pouakai track, a track close to Mount Taranaki (the mountain in the image) on the west coast of the northern island of New Zealand.Time
This photo was taken at the beginning of golden hour. I reached the location only an hour before taking this shot, having walked for a good five to six hours to get there.Lighting
This shot was taken using only natural lighting. With a perfect clear sky and gorgeous sunset, there was no need to add any additional light.Equipment
I used my trusty Canon 7D mk2 in combination with the Canon 24 - 105mm f4.0 L lens. The camera was set up on a tripod.Inspiration
When getting to the location and finding seeing the near perfect conditions I knew I had to take my time and get a reflection shot of the mountain. With the pond being a perfect mirror, there wasn't even the need to shoot longer exposures (this was shot at 1/160s). This shot ended up being one of many capturing the changing colours in the sky.Editing
I generally process all my photos in Lightroom CC, this one included. I want to go for a slightly more artistic look than a natural look so I took the editing a bit more over the top. Besides the usual white balance, histogram and contrast tweaks, I used quite a few gradient filters. In my camera bag
During multiple-day hiking trips like the one I took this photo on, I try to keep my equipment to a minimum. I usually carry my camera, two lenses (the 24 - 105 and a Sigma 10-20mm f4.0 - f5.6) a not so compact travel/ studio tripod, and ND and polarisation filter. On top of that I have three or four different memory cards, two spare batteries and a tiny flashlight with a warm light LED in it. Just enough to capture whatever I want to.Feedback
With the remoteness of the location I would say: "travel light!" You will feel every extra kilo you bring with you. For the shot itself I kept the camera low to the ground lining getting a pleasant composition of both the mountain and its reflection. I try to get to the location as early as possible just to set up the shot and see how the light and conditions are changing or will change. Once at the location and having everything set up, take your time to wait for the perfect shot.
