You'd almost think it was the Wikipedia photo!...
This relatively rare British royal cypher is that of Edward VIII who abdicated within a year of becoming King in 1936. This façade of the old Toronto post office built that year on the site of Montgomery's Tavern, one of the meeting-sites of the instigators of the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837, 99 years earlier, is to be incorporated into the newly planned condominiums.
... Three years later, this building is now a Loblaws grocery store, the first floor facade having been preserved - thank goodness, though the plaque remembering Montgomery's Tavern and the Rebellion of 1837 has not been replaced after renovations and, so, all local references of this site's history are gone.
(I darkened the photo just a tad to bring out the quality of the stone.)
... Even more recently, the holes have been fixed and the historical plaque is back. Huzzah!
