Behind The Lens

Location

At Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham, NC.

Time

Around 2pm

Lighting

Just natural light

Equipment

Sony NEX 5n with Sony 30mm macro lens and additional 10x and 6x macro filters

Inspiration

It was a beautiful sunny summer day and I had gone to the gardens specifically to try out my new macro filters. I used two of them together, the 10x and 6x, in addition to my macro lens. The dragonfly was so nice and just posed for me until I was done!

Editing

I only cropped the image, everything else is straight out of the camera.

In my camera bag

I just got a brand new Sony a7 for my birthday, so I have been having a lot of success using it with the kit lens. I also have my Sony NEX 5n with standard Sony 18-55 lens, 30mm macro, 55-210 telephoto, and 50mm prime lenses. Slowly working towards upgrading to some Zeiss!

Feedback

I would have to say that in addition to extreme patience, you need to look. I mean, really look. Interesting subject matter doesn't always jump out and say "shoot here!" Sometimes you have to take a moment to see the beauty in everyday things that most people will pass right by. Don't rely on post-processing to make your material interesting, rely on your artistic and creative eye first, lighting and shadow second, processing last. Make sure you understand your equipment and how to use it in more than just automatic mode - know which mode best suits the subject and situation. And when you are shooting so closely, make sure you hold your breath from the time you compose the shot to the moment the shutter clicks - I don't use a tripod at all, so stillness is so very important for detail and clarity.
