This was taken on Dinas Dinlle beach in North West Wales. It is one of my favourite places in the world.Time
This was taken on a cold winter's evening at around 5PM. It had been a lovely sunny day (which is rare for Wales in the winter) so I decided to head to the beach with my camera after work, which happened to be the perfect time of day for a shot like this. The fact that it was a windy day was also a bonus as the waves were very dramatic, which enabled me to capture them in my shot.Lighting
I wanted to capture the amazing colours that a winter sunset brings out. It was important for me that the photo had enough shadows both to convey the time of day and to add some drama to the shot.Equipment
This was taken on my Canon EOS 1200D with the 18-55 kit lens.Inspiration
Dinas Dinlle is one of my favourite places in the world, and the time just before the sun sets is by far my favourite time of day. The fact that it had been a lovely day of winter sun guaranteed that the sunset would be worth capturing that day; and what better place to capture that sunset but on that beach with the waves crashing beneath the stunning sky.Editing
This shot was darker originally. I tweaked the shadows a little bit on lightroom and brought out the yellow/orange and blue in the sky to create the desired dramatic effect.In my camera bag
I only have one camera and I mainly use my 18-55mm lens as it's so versatile. I also have a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens in my bag as it is so lightweight and portable and is great for low light shots (both for portraits and landscape). I also carry a mini tripod around with me as I generally like to shoot in the evenings which means that I occasionally need to set a longer exposure, so the mini tripod comes in very handy.Feedback
It's difficult to catch the sunset at the best time, particularly on a beach on a windy day in Wales in the winter. My advice would be to check what time the sunset is going to happen on the evening you're planning to shoot and arrive at least an hour before. The times just before and just after a sunset are the best times for a good photo, in my experience. Also, bring a tripod if your lens isn't an IS lens to ensure you get the clearest possible photo.
