Behind The Lens

Location

My best friend gave birth to twin boys: Jackson and Kaydon. Jackson is the one doing the eating.... We decided to try to get some 6 month old pictures at her house on the dining room table. I placed the boys on this lambskin that I had (they were only wearing their diapers). Once the boys were placed next to each other I started to snap some photos. Jackson somehow found his way to Kaydon's nose and this was the result. My best friend and I were absolutely thrilled with how the photo came out. It seems all unplanned things are usually best.

Time

The time of day was around noon. Both babies had just had their bottles and were getting sleepy. I figured this would be a great time to get some photos. The boys were no longer fussy and this made life so much easier.

Lighting

The only lighting we really had, was the dining room overhead light and the flash that had gone off upon snapping the photo. I did not have anything special, I guess it was just the right amount of light to capture such a cute photo.

Equipment

I have 2 cameras that I use when taking photos. I have a Nikon D3100 and a Nikon D5200. I switch off because one of them has the 15-55 lens and the other has the 55-200. In this case I used the D5200. I did not use a tripod so I could capture different angles and I do not have any additional flash. I had tried to use a tripod but I just could not get the angle and closeness I wanted. I am gradually adding new equipment to my camera bag but as everyone already knows that takes time and money.

Inspiration

I love to take photos of newborns and always have. They have an innocence about them you cannot find in too many other places I feel. I like to take nude shots but have found that most parents do not really like it. I decided to make it appear that the babies were nude still giving them that newborn look.

Editing

The only post processing I have to do it go from the RAW shot to the JPEG using Photoshop Elements 11. Sometimes I will change the lighting and add effects to a photo, but this shot just had to be left to stand alone. I was so very pleased with how it came out and I would not change anything on it.

In my camera bag

My camera bag contains 2 cameras: a Nikon D3100 and a Nikon D5200. I have a 15-55 lens, two 55-200 lens, hood, a wide angle lens with Macro and a number of wires and cables. I am hoping to be able to add a good telephoto lens someday.

Feedback

My only advice for others trying to capture any good shot is take many many photos. When you sit down to look through them it is easy to delete the ones you don't like in this age of digital photography. For every one or two good shots I have had, I delete a multitude of others. I try to have my camera anywhere I go, especially since you just never know when that great shot is going to be available. (It's funny for instance, I go past this area of my town where the tide goes way, way out every day. There is this little dog playing in the low tide pools. I have tried to capture this shot so many times, but have yet to get the right shot.) So all i can say is don't be afraid to take many shots, at many different angles. You will never know when that perfect shot will take place.
