While hiking Pilgrim creek in the Grand Teton National Park, I was pleased to run across my first American Dipper. Being unfamiliar with the species, I was fascinated by some of its behavior. It was feeding along the edge, and at times diving in the fast-moving stream, which seemed unusual for what looked like a songbird. The flashing of the white feathers on the eyelids as it blinked and frequent bobbing of its body up and down were really sparking my interest in getting a nice shot of this bird. It had been frequenting a log in the middle of the creek, so after some backtracking I was able to make it to a dry spot with a view of the log. I had lost sight of the bird while getting there, but within a few minutes he returned and I was able to get the shot you see here of North America’s only aquatic song bird.
