Location
This was taken near Columbia, Maryland one May morning in while waiting for a group hot air balloon launch in honor of the Preakness horse race. The weather turned out to to be an issue, so they never launched. While I was waiting and pacing, I looked off to the left and saw the mist and the sunrise, and had to take a shot! The balloons are all off behind me. I didn't actually like any of those shots but loved this light!Time
6:20 in the AM, Canoa bit on the cool side.Lighting
Just the hot sunrise through the cool mist!Equipment
Shot on a Canon 7D, hand held, EF28-135mm @ 44mm, ISO 400, 1/1000 @ f11Inspiration
The light and the mist were irresistibleWarmEditing
Using Lightroom, warmed it up, dropped exposure 1.3 stops, dropped the highlights down, boosted clarity and vibrance, a touch of saturation. In my camera bag
I mostly do landscapes. Canon body and lenses: Canon 5D MkIIi, 50mm and 40mm pancake, 28-135 or 24-70, often an old 35-350. Sometimes a 16-35 2.8. Lately, using a Yongnuo YN685 and YN622 controller for some family group photosFeedback
I think the most obvious advice is to just be attentive to your surroundings. It would have been hard to miss the sunrise and mist unless I was so targeted on the balloons that I zoned out. Some of my best shots end up being pretty spur of the moment when what I am actually trying to get turns out to be a bust.
