Behind The Lens

Location

I didn't have to go too far for this shot as the parrot was sitting on the clothes line in the back yard. We often get king parrots at our place however there is one that is very tame and will let me get very close without being startled.

Time

This was taken around midday. It had been raining most of the morning but the rain had stopped and the clouds had thinned enough to allow a nice soft light through that was perfect for taking a picture like this.

Lighting

The key to any great photo is getting the light right. The cloud cover was just right to allow a nice soft and diffused light through whilst still have a shutter speed above 1/15 to minimise and camera shake. This would be as low as i would go on shutter speed with image stabilisation (IS) and 1/160 with IS. I used evaluative metering mode and did not have any exposure compensation.

Equipment

The equipment was very simple for this shot. I used a Canon 6D full frame camera and a standard 24-105mm lens. I could get the shutter speed fast enough with the available light to avoid the need for a high ISO or tripod.

Inspiration

This photo was more opportunistic than anything. I was doing an assignment for one of the photography course that I have completed and just experimenting with various items in the backyard when the parrot came for a visit.

Editing

I usually shoot in raw so some post processing was undertaken, but was minimal. I did a bit of image rotating and cropping. Exposure and colour was spot on from the camera. I did adjust the white balance slightly as the camera was on auto white balance.

In my camera bag

These days my equipment looks like this. Cameras: Canon 5D Mk4 and a Canon SX50 backup Lens: Canon L Series 24-70 f/4.0, Sigma Art 50mm f/1, Canon L Series 16-35 f/4.0, Canon L Series 70-200mm f/2.8, Canon L Series 100-400mm f/4.0 Flash: Canon Speedlight 430 EX-III Tripod Filters: ND8, Several UV filters Remote Shutter Release Pluto Shutter Release

Feedback

I find that pictures like this do require a bit of luck, but I have also found that the more you are out taking photos, the luckier you become. Thanks for reading. Michael F
