Behind The Lens

Location

This was in my back in rural AUSTRALIA. I get a lot of native birds but this was new to the area. I was just lucky to spot it on the day.

Time

This was taken mid morning.

Lighting

I thought I may have had too much back lighting given it was a cloudy day and shooting towards the sky. I went up a full stop to compensate.

Equipment

Camera was a 6D and lens was 100-400L series telephoto.

Inspiration

I lived the contrasting blue on the face of the bird that really highlighted its eyes.

Editing

Post processing was mainly cropping to centre in frame and brought up some of the shadows.

In my camera bag

I have increased the kit over the past year or so but generally I find the following great base: tripod, remote shutter lead, Canon 6D, Canon SX50, speedlight flash, standard 24-100 lens, 50mm f-1.8, 27-35mm f5.6 L series landscape, 100-400L series telephoto.

Feedback

Birds are great subject choices especially given the wonderful colours that can be contrasted against various backdrops. Make sure you get plenty of shots off especially if they are a bit flighty and keep the aperture open so that higher shutter speeds can be used so the bird or animal becomes the main focus.
