Location
This photograph was taken in the surfzone on the north side of Manhattan Beach Pier, in Manhattan Beach, California.Time
This was taken at sunset, which was about 6:15 PM.Lighting
It was a difficult shot to catch as I was shooting directly into the sun so had to deal with sunflare, plus all of the light reflecting off of the water. I used a combination of ND filters to avoid overexposing the sky and clouds and still catch enough light on the pier and waves to show the spectular color of the backlit water.Equipment
Taken with Canon EOS-7D, Tamron 10-24 mm Ultra-Wide Lens, and Manfroto CF tripodInspiration
I was fortunate to be living close to the beach at the time, so had been going to the pier several nights a week with the hope of catching a spectacular sunset photo of the very photogenic pier.Editing
I processed the RAW image and then made minor adjustments in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I carry a large Tamrac backback when I go out shooting which I overload with a Tamron 10-24 mm ultrawide, 70-200 mm Canon telephoto, Tamron 24-70 mm, Tamron 90 mm macro, a beehive of ND, polarizing, and other filters, plus my trust Manfrotto CF tripod. I also carry a shemaug, cleaning kit, gloves, and stocking cap, and some water and snacks.Feedback
Be patient, be persistent, and never leave before sunset is totally over. Also think about taking some long exposure sunset photos where the night sky is amazing even after the sun has gone down below the horizon. I've taken some of my best photographs just minutes after some other photographers who were there next to me gave up and went home for the night.
