Location
Taken in the wee hours of the morning from the over-water boardwalk at the Marriott Hotel at Hurghada, Egypt, on the Red Sea.Time
It was quite late and not being tired, I had slipped out of our hotel room while my wife was inside sleeping so I could explore the resort on our first night. Being so late, I was fortunate to catch this people-less photo of the usually busy boardwalk that connects the hotel to a small island directly offshore from the hotel and beach.Lighting
The resort had under water lighting set up beneath the pier, giving the crystal clear waters of the Red Sea a mesmerizing blue color. Not having my Canon EOS 5D MK-III and equipment on hand, I used my iPhone to capture this shot, which it turns out to have been one of my favorites from our trip.Equipment
Apple iPhone 11 and a steady hand.Inspiration
The amazingly blue waters of the Red Sea were like magnets to my camera and since the only one I had with me at the time was my iPhone, I did my best to capture a good shot of the water, using the backlit pier and resort as supporting characters in the shot. I've always enjoyed exploring our destinations at night, looking for unusual or noteworthy photographic opportunities.Editing
This one is just a regular old iPhone shot.In my camera bag
I usually carry a large backpack which about kills me, but allows me to carry all of my gear, as there is nothing worse than hiking out to an extraordinary location and then finding that you really could have used the "X" lens or filter, and then regretting that you don't have it to make that special shot a "super" shot - Canon EOS 5D MKIII, Tamron 24-70 mm short telephoto, Tamron 10-24 mm ultrawide, Canon 70-200 telephoto, Canon 2X doubler, a filter hive with a bunch of ND filters, cable release (x2), Manfrotto CF tripod and Really-Right Stuff medium ballhead.Feedback
When you don't have your camera and all your gear, you will often have your cell phone, so get one with a good camera! I always take my cell phone wherever I go, even when I'm out taking pictures with all of my "regular" camera gear, and on more than one occasion, one of my best photos has been taken with my cell phone rather than my "professional" camera and lens.
