I took this photo on the beach of the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on the beautiful Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii in December 2015.Time
This was taken well past sunset, many minutes after the sun had dropped below the horizon. The actual sunset wasn't very inspiring, the post-sunset sky was beautiful with amazing colors ranging from brilliant red-orange to cobalt blue in the upper sky.Lighting
There was a gentle breeze blowing on this night, so I knew that I was going to have a messy shot with blurry trees if I tried to use too slow of a shutter speed, so I went with 1/40 on the tripod and used a higher ISO of 1000, which gave me just enough speed to catch a fairly sharp silhouette of the trees, and still be slow enough to catch us much light in the sky as possible.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 5D MKIII with a Tamron 10-24mm ultrawide angle lens set at 18 mm, 5.6, 1/40, all of which was sitting on my trusty Manfroto CF tripod and medium ball head by RRS.Inspiration
After a week of rather blasé sunsets for Hawaii, this was our last night on the island so I was determined to stay out on the beach to squeeze every last photo out of the trip possible.Editing
I always shoot as large of a RAW file as my camera will allow. When I get home, I upload these to my desktop, where I with then do my initial review in Adobe Bridge, making note of any particularly good shots that I will later process first in Camera Raw, then into Photoshop where I will make any edits, finally saving a big file as a TIFF for possible enlarging, and a smaller JPG for emailing to friends or posting online.In my camera bag
I have a rather large camera backpack which I usually carry with me on all of my photo excursions. It gets pretty heavy when doing a hard hike (like when trekking up to see Delicate Arch in Utah!), but I'd rather take all of my stuff, than get to a location only to wish I had the lens that I left at home to lighten my load. My bag contains my Canon EOS 5D MKIII, Canon 70-200 telephoto, Tamron 10-24 ultrawide, Tamron 90 macro, and Tamron 24-70, plus a doubler, cable shutter release, and of course, my filter hive containing a number of ND filters, graduated ND filters, polarizers, and cleaning gear. Finally, strapped to the outer pack, I carry my trusty Manfroto CF tripod with a medium ball head from Really Right Stuff.Feedback
Never leave the location too soon! I have lucked out many times by staying until well after everyone else has left, only to have the lighting conditions suddenly change, presenting a fantastic shot for anyone who was persistent enough to hang around for that last shot.
