Location
This shot was taken in Watkins Glen State Park in Upstate New York, USATime
I camped the day before in Watkins Glen campground, woke up early and started hiking. This shot was taken around 11 AM. It was cloudy which worked in my favor and broke the harsh sunlight and shined really pretty light through the gorge.Lighting
When I composed the scene after couple of other shots, I knew that this will go black and white. Now in black and white everything goes to the contrast and the different shades of gray that can be rendered. I thought that this composition would work well because of the way the light coming from the top flowing down with water.Equipment
This shot was taken with Canon 600D, Canon EF f/4 24-105mm at 24mm and f/16. I had my trusty Manfrotto tripod on me.Inspiration
Watkins Glen is really a pretty place. The gorge and the trees that surround it and water flowing down under your foot with its sound. I wanted to capture the beauty of the placeEditing
Post processing was little tricky for this one. First I did some minor RAW adjustments in Adobe Lightroom, then I had to get rid of people on the staircase on left. I used Photoshop to do the job by using statistics and cloning. After that I converted the shot to B&W using Nik Collection SilverEfex. Then couple of more enhancements and final touches in Photoshop. In my camera bag
Equipments in my bag usually change based on my mood. Sometimes I feel like shooting film so I carry on either Canon 1V HS or my Mamiya RZ67 ProII or even 6x18 Zero Image camera. If I want digital then I used to carry my Canon 600d with bunch of Canon lenses. Now I go with my Sony A7Rii and couple of Zeiss lenses. Manfrotto tripod is always with me. I usually 90% shoot on tripod. Lee filters like 10 stops and 2 stops filtersFeedback
My advice to others shooting in places like Watkins Glen is to be patient. Although the shot looks like there's no one there but the place is super crowded and I'm sure that many photographers have the same problem. The key is to be patient. There's a moment when it's yours and you can take a shot. Don't rely on Photoshop 100% and say I'll remove them in Photoshop. Wait till it's perfect or almost perfect then finish it in Photoshop.
