Behind The Lens

Location

Well, i used to have an office-studio in Guilin, Guangxi, China and that's where this was taken. The model is a friend and she has appeared in many of my photos. I owe her a lot :) and wish her success and the best Time can offer.

Time

I usually take my in studio photos in the evening, so this was also taken in the evening. Having said that, i may add that the time of day does not change much while shooting in studio, you draw the curtains and blind the windows out so there is as little environmental and ambient light as possible and even when there is little ambient light, it might be ignored due to the shutter speed and other parameters of the shoot.

Lighting

I love how images shape in one point light setups and that has been my favourite setup, of course i can add reflectors and bounce back light or flag it if i have to. In this shot, however, i have added a second light to light up the background and allow the separation of the subject.

Equipment

Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark III; Lens: 24 - 105mm L f/4. Aperture: f/4; ISO: 3200; Shutter Speed: 1/80 and Focal Length: 105/1. I usually use a tripod for maximum sharpness. In studio, i use strobes to light my subjects and background. I also use V flats as well as reflectors and different types of light modifiers such as beauty dishes, barn doors and so on.

Inspiration

I love the moon, i always have and i have always wanted to show my appreciation and love for the moon. I also love beautiful flowers, here, these are Flamingo Lilies and together with my beautiful model, you have a combination of the three beauties. The model is somewhat hidden from view by the beautiful flowers and the moon is barely visible placed in the eye of the model. You can workout the rest for yourself, i should not tell all, it is an image and it should speak for itself.

Editing

I have mentioned this for another photo which got featured, 'Photography is more than clicking the shutter and saving an image file in a certain format.' One has to cook the raw files and then serve the final outcome. Therefore, of course, there was plenty of post processing going on to this image. Mainly this was done in Adobe's Photoshop and Lightroom, but most of the editing was done in Photoshop. The conversion into Black and White along with some image adjustments were done in Lightroom. The rest is silence ;) I may also add that, i have been trying to make the image in the camera and do as little post processing as possible, but some images, such as this very one, are different and therefore may require hours and hours and sometimes days of post processing in order to achieve what the artist has in their mind.

In my camera bag

I do not usually go out without a camera and a tripod (or a mono-pod) at the least is also going along with me, one never knows what chance may bring along. On certain occasions, I would take two bodies, three lenses, an ND filter and a Polarising filter along with extra batteries and memory cards. A lens and sensor cleaning kit and tissues and handkerchiefs too.

Feedback

Look for the right light, if you are not shooting in studio, if you are shooting in studio, make the right light and then carry on from there :) Best wishes and stay happy :)
