Location
This was taken at Grosmont, home of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, while on a visit to the nearby seaside town of Whitby.Time
Taken in the morning, but not at first light. If you are really keen, you can visit the engine sheds when they start up the trains, quite a lengthy process. I took this on the platform rather than the sheds, so it is one that anybody can take.Lighting
Lighting was overcast which is pretty much perfect when photographing trains as sunlight can cause harsh reflections.Equipment
A Canon 5D and a Canon 100-400L lens, no tripod, filters or flash used.Inspiration
I have been a few times to Grosmont, it is like stepping back in time. The people that run and work on the trains are all volunteers and are well used to photographers. As well as trains passing through the station, there are also the engine sheds so there is loads to photograph.Editing
Photos are processed in lightroom, with just saturation, curves and in this case a crop to tighten the composition. Then is is re-sized and sharpened in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I now have a Canon 6D, with 17-40L, 24-105L and 100-400L Canon lensesFeedback
The photo was taken on the main platform as the train moved from the back to the front of the carriages. I was hoping for the driver to blow off steam and he did, framing the engine with steam. The long lens was used to keep the engine in view as it was a distance from the platform. It is a shot anybody can take with some reasonable photo gear, it is just a matter of watching and waiting and be ready to catch the action.
