Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Govan, Washington, 90 miles west of my home in Spokane, Washington.

Time

Sunset.

Lighting

It was a day off from work and the cloudy sky and weather forecast were promising enough for me to see if I could catch a nice sunset with this old schoolhouse in the forground. As I drove the clouds were clearing out on the horizon and I became concerned that I would miss my opportunity but I kept on driving with the hope the clouds would return. I left early enough to get there and scout the composition potential of the area and was pleased to see the clouds coming back creating some beautiful colorful lighting as the sun set. I was able to move around getting different perspectives while the light changed and settled on this composition as my favorite of the evening.

Equipment

Image taken with a Nikon D300, Nikon 18-200 3.5-5.6 zoom lens, on a Monfrotto aluminum tripod. I always use a hot shoe mount bubble level when shooting my landscapes.

Inspiration

I saw this old schoolhouse on a photo sharing site and was immediately inspired visualizing the possibilites of the unique architecture and dilapidated condition of the building with some nice lighting conditions. I worked a full time job at the time so I waited until the weather conditions were good enough on one my days off.

Editing

There were 2 images used with -1.0 and -3.0 exposure blended together to capture the full dynamic range. I started post processing the RAW images in Adobe Camera Raw adjusting for lens correction, white balance, highlights and shadows before opening in Photoshop to blend the 2 images using Blend If. Noise reduction done in Topaz DeNoise prior to final edits. The blended image comes out flat and so the final edits were done in Nik Software using Color Efex Pro presets to boost the contrast, saturation, curves, and a slight softening for the final result. I sharpen following these edits in Nik Output Sharpener.

In my camera bag

This image was taken in 2011 and I have since upgraded my equipment. I currently use the Nikon D750 for landscapes. Depending on what I'm shooting I'll use the Nikon 28-300 3.5-5.6 (when I carry only one lens), Tamron 15-30 2.8 (wide angle, and night star photography), Tamron 70-200 2.8. My tripod is the Benro Mach3. Haida 150 x 150 polarizer, 3 stop, and 10 stop filters for the Tamron 15-30 lens. I also have the Nikon D500 and Tamron 150-600 g2 lens for wildlife photography.

Feedback

This scene is enhanced tremendously during sunset with the ever changing light and colors. I used a lower perspective to capture the interesting sky and reduce as much of the area occupied by the stubble and weeds as possible. I placed the doorway and steeple in the right third of the frame filling the frame as much as possible with the school to show the details without blocking to much of the sky. Side note: This building was last used in 1942 and since I took this photo the bell tower steeple has collapsed.
