The photo was talken on a field less than a mile away from my home. I often drove by that field when I was cycling.Time
I took the picture at about 3pm on August 28th, 2010. A beautiful, sunny summer day, so perfect time to get a sunflower shot ...Lighting
I was originally looking for a backlit sunflower, but it was too early in the day (the flowers are normally directed to the east), so I 'only' got some striplight from the side. But in this case, it highlighted the structure of the flower, so I was happy with this outcome, too.Equipment
I used a Nikon D700 with a 2.8/70-200mm VR at 200mm with an aperture of 5.0 to isolate the flower in the foreground. I didn't use a wider aperture as I wanted to still show the flowers in the background.Inspiration
I often passed that field when I was cycling and I just love the view of these sunflowers. A large print of this picture hangs just behind my chair while I'm writing this.Editing
I only did some minor post processing: I just bumped the contrast a bit and did some sharpening. In my camera bag
After my full frame DSLR equipment got to heavy for my taste, I switched to the micro four thirds system. First with an Olympus E-M1 and recently I upgraded to the E-M1 Mk. II. I have a collection of lenses from 8mm to 280 mm focal length, so I can chose the best fitting lenses depending on the occasion.Feedback
I took this shot in walking distance from my home. So this is proof that you do not have to travel to exotic places to make nice photos (but it still is a good idea to do so to broaden your horizon ;) ) - you can find great subjects anywwhere. It is also a great way to train your eye: Go to a familiar place and then try to take an interesting picture.
