Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on an older style river boat that catered for functions and weddings. It cruises the Yarra river, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Time

The wedding was in the afternoon and the signing of the register was on the bow of the boat. The bride's hair and veil were lifted as the wind swirled around her.

Lighting

I wanted to show their love for each other by asking them to rest their heads together. There was a weak yellow sun light behind them. As I turned this into a silhouette you cannot see any background or colours.

Equipment

I use my Canon 5D Mark 3 DSLR with my favourite lens the 24-105mm. Flash was used inside the boat but not up on deck. I hand hold my camera as I have to move around a lot when taking wedding photos. A tripod is just too unwieldy especially in smaller spaces.

Inspiration

I have never been on a boat before for a function. So I really didn't know what to expect even though I had done some research into the layout of the boat by looking at their website. I tried all sorts of angles to get as much details of the surroundings for the wedding service and signing of the register. But once up on deck after all the formalities were over. the young couple could relax and just enjoy looking at the sights at the boat cruised down the river. So having them pose on deck with the breeze ruffling hair and veil I just went with it. Editing was done later improving colours and fixing any little flaws. Then I tried it with the silhouette effect. I have been really surprised how well it turned out.

Editing

Back then I did not have Lightroom nor how to use it. I used PhotoScape which is a really nice program. Free and very easy to use. I tried to improve all the photos back then and was happy with my achievements. I cropped this photos and the black silhouette effect was called Threshold and found in the "bright, colour" tab, I just experimented until I found a pleasing result.

In my camera bag

It depends on what job I am off to but I always take two or three cameras. The Canon 7D, 5D Mark 2 and Mark 3. My favourite lens is usually on the Mark 3. I pack the 70-200mm and 100-400mm if I am off to sport and need telephotos lenses. I also have a 50mm and an 85mm lens. I have two Canon Speedlites the 430EXII and the 600EX-RT. But I am happiest with the 430 as I haven't mastered the bigger flash yet. I take battery chargers and spare memory cards. I will take the tripod if I think it is likely that it would be useful. Sometimes I take the card reader in case someone wants me to transfer photos straight away or I plan to take a laptop with me for back up of the photos I have taken throughout the session- like for a very long wedding day.

Feedback

As this photo was not a silhouette image taken with the camera but an image that was created through easy editing I can only suggest experimenting with other photos that you have already taken or plan to take in the future and think they might look great in Black and White via the Threshold editing tool in PhotoScape or whatever works. I have seen some wonderful images with the sun making beautiful silhouette photos and I will surely try to capture some myself.
