Gorgeous little cat was my fave. He caught rats when he was older and brought them up to farmhouse to show us how clever he was. He used to go walkabout for a week or so, come back hungry. Last time he never came back.

This photo was taken in my lounge room. The kitten was in my husband's work boot.Time
I can't remember the time of day the photo was taken. Probably middle of the day. I didn't have a speedlight back then, so would have been just whatever the camera was able to capture. Possibly the light from the big window was enough.Lighting
Place your props where there is sufficient natural light if possible. Make sure the blinds are fully open, so there is no shadow across your subject.Equipment
This was shot with my first DSLR the Canon 1000D. I would have used the kit lens 18-55 that came with it. I shot in auto focus as I was very much a beginner. Also it was a JPG as I had no idea back then about the RAW option. Aperture: f/5,ISO: 400,Shutter Speed: 1/60,Focal Length: 41/1 I didn't use a tripod as I wanted to be down low. I would have been sitting on the floor with the kittens and just popped into the boot and took the photo. Very much a snapshot.Inspiration
The five kittens were so cute. I took lots of photos of them to look back on and remember how little and cute they were. I would have put him in the boot to see if I could get a good photo. He stayed in there long enough for me to do so.Editing
I cropped the photo. I would have done a small amount of editing on a free editing program. I didn't have Lightroom or Photoshop or have a clue how to use them. Picasa and Kodak editing programs were the choice back then.In my camera bag
Now well, I have moved on to bigger and better camera gear. I was very happy with my second Canon the 7D, which my daughter now has and uses it to photograph her little girls. I have a Canon 5d Mark 2 and a Mark 3. I have a variety of lenses. The main one I use is the 24-105mm. As I photograph AFL (Australian Rules) football and netball on weekends I use the 100-400mm lens on the second camera. I also have a 70-200mm. Plus an extender, but have found it tricky to use. I have a 50mm and 85mm and a Sigma fish eye but hardly use them. They aren't in my bag, as I don't expect to be changing lenses when I am out for the day. I decided to have a battery grip for all cameras and two batteries inside each one. I always have the chargers in case I need to recharge at a venue. And many compact flash cards. Always have back up empty cards just in case something goes wrong.Feedback
Be patient. Set up everything before placing a little animal inside something so that once in place you are ready to quickly capture them before they move. If this happens, try again, but perhaps let them have time away from it so that it is a novelty. Then they might want to do it again. Perhaps have other ideas for possible shots so that you can have a variety of cute photos on the day. I also caught a kitten getting inside a big vase which was lying on the floor. The kitten turned around inside the vase and was peeking out at the others I also caught them climbing on a waste paper bin. Little animals are unpredictable. You often don't have to do much to capture something worthwhile. Just watch and be ready to catch them playing or exploring. The same could be said for little babies and toddlers. Watch, wait and be ready.
