Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken during a trip to a great venue in Balymote co Sligo. (WHERE EAGLES FLY) is a small zoo and large aviary that has many large predatory birds including Golden Eagles , Vultures and eagle owls. The birds are released to fly and are a wondrous sight as they swoop down to where you can be seated and fly inches above you.

Time

I took the image during the late afternoon when the bird was resting on a perch, being used to people he remained still as I focused from a distance of less than two metres.

Lighting

I had no control of the lighting as flash photography was not allowed and the subjects were either flying or on static perches in the daylight.

Equipment

The camera I had at the time was a Sony Cybershot DSC HX1 It was handheld

Inspiration

I loved the regal look of the large bird and was delighted to get close contact with the lighting right for the subject matter

Editing

a simple crop was made to tighten the area of owl

In my camera bag

I now carry a Nikon D3300 with an 18/ 55 kit lens a 50mm 1.8 prime lens and a Sigma 70/300 dg macro a set of extension tubes an assortment of Cokin and graduated neutral density filters, Also a Benro tripod and remote controls for the camera

Feedback

If anyone wants to take close up photos of Birds I would suggest a trip to open-air aviaries where you should be able to get close shots without long lenses
