I shot this photo at my shop, it is actually a macro of my business partner's eye!Time
We both enjoy photography and had free time in the afternoon, naturally we decided to experiment with our company's new macro lens. Even though the sun was still high in the sky in the early afternoon, we had to set up some external flashes and lights in order to light the eyeball correctly. If you thought looking into a light and seeing spots was bad... definitely don't look into a flash :PLighting
I set up an external flash on the right, left, and above the subjects eye. I also had a light facing him as well to ensure the image was well light, do to the intense magnification of this macro lens. It took a handful of shots to get the lighting and focus just right, but practice makes perfect!Equipment
At the time this was with a Rebel T4i (recently upgraded to a Mark iii) and Cannon 65mm f2.8 1-5x macro lens. I also had a tripod (necessary for this lens) and 3 external flashes!Inspiration
Honestly, I was taking photos of anything I thought would look cool with a macro lens, that the human eye cannot see. Then I had the realization that an eyeball would probably be the COOLEST thing to shoot with this much of a magnification. After playing around with lighting and positioning, it turned out to be true.Editing
Yes! I edit in Lightroom and utilized various of the sliders to really make the photo pop. The colors were all true to the original, however there are various tricks you can use with luminosity to make them pop a bit more. I am also a big fan of using clarity and sharpness to add more dimension and unique looks to my photos. In my camera bag
I shoot with my Canon Mark iii and my favorite lens is the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8. I enjoy travel and urban shots and the ultra wide angle allows for a very unique perspective on what normally may be an average shot. I also carry a "nifty-fifty" for street shooting and a macro if I am going to the zoo or botanical gardens. It is also a must for me to carry a set of ND filters, extra batteries/memory, and various other items to be ready for anything when I am out shooting. It is so much fun to be in the zone walking and looking at the world in a completely different view than the people around you. I tend to get engulfed and walk around for an entire day so I make sure I am prepared for anything from equipment to provisions.Feedback
Eyes are one of the most recognizable features of the body, however they are so very unique to each person and tell a story about who someone is before even speaking a word to them. If someone were to take a macro shot of and eye I would tell them to consider how they would want to portray the subject, what level of magnification do they want (ie. partial face showing, eye only, etc.).
