Location
This photo was taken at an old abandoned ski resort in northern Michigan up at the top of the runs.Time
This photo was taken right as the sun was setting. We arrived back at the townhouse we were staying at near the hill and noticed that the sky looked great for a sunset so we raced up to the top of the hill as quickly as we can. Fortunately we made it in time to get a few nice shots from different locations on the hill.Lighting
The relatively clear sky with some cloud action as well made the sunset especially colorful and beautiful. There is definitely something special about finding that day with just the right amount of clouds to give some interest to the sky and create some magical colors.Equipment
This photograph was taken just with my Pentax K-3 and no tripod or filters, just a steady hand and some beautiful scenery.Inspiration
I have been coming up to this area my entire life, even when the ski resort was still operational. Over the years it has become more and more rundown, but this barn has still stood the test of time. I wanted to capture something that gave life to all those memories even as the resort fades away.Editing
The beautiful lighting of the sunset created minimal overall work after the fact. Some clarity was added in Lightroom and the shadows were lightened up, but otherwise it was as is.In my camera bag
I generally just keep with me my Pentax K-3 and depending on where I am going may bring a tripod along if I am expecting some longer exposures. I do not have much in the way of equipment yet as I am still starting out so I like to keep it basic.Feedback
It really is hard to go wrong with a sunset out in nature. I think you can really add another level to that by including a subject matter that really means a lot to you personally. Being able to include a setting such as the old ski resort this photo was taken at makes me cherish the image even more than any other sunset picture on a hill.
