Location
This photo was taken on the Big Island of Hawaii at the Kekaha Kai State Park. The year this was taken there was a disturbance in the Pacific Ocean that was creating large waves. January usually has bigger swells in Hawaii but this year they were higher than normal. This beach is off the beaten path with a very rutted unimproved road over an old lava bed from the main highway to the beach. Away from the luxury hotels, it's a bit of old Hawaii, white sand, protected bay, palm trees blowing in the breeze.Time
This was at sunset. We got to the park late afternoon and stayed till sunset. It's a 15 min drive to the gate and they lock it at 7 PM sharp so you can't stay on the beach after sunset. We've been told and read in guide books that you will be locked in after 7 PM.Lighting
Beautiful directional light with the golden glow that you see in Hawaii.Equipment
Canon 5D Mark III, EF24-105mm. 1/350 sec at f/13, ISO 400. This was handheld as I was on the beach with the waves washing up. I wanted to stop the wave action thus the fast shutter speed and get as much in focus as possible so the small aperture. ISO to balance the two.Inspiration
When in Hawaii I'm hoping to get that awesome photo. This day I had photographers luck on my side with a gorgeous sunset, the waves were pounding in so my husband could not do any snorkeling and we sat on the beach waiting for the sunset. This little girl started playing tag with the waves and that drew me to include her love of fun at the end of the day in my shot. You can see she is getting ready to run back up the sand and the waves are teasing her. This is one of my favorite shots from Hawaii. I took a series of photos of her and this photo has her poised to move forward which added to the story.Editing
In Lightroom, the left side of the photo was shadowed so I added a graduated filter and opened up those shadows, brought down the highlights, increased clarity, did another graduated filter for the sky to increase the warmth of the sky. Finished in Topaz DeNoise. In my camera bag
I don't put a lot in my bag when we are headed for the beach. Usually, I only bring one camera body with the lens I want to use already attached. I always bring my tripod and ND filters if I'm trying to take a long exposure along with batteries and lens cleaning kit. My travel tripod is our third person when my husband and I want a shot of us so the intervalometer is also in my bag to give me running room to be in the photo.Feedback
When on vacation you are a tourist but underneath you are a photographer so you should be looking at the weather, listening to forecasts and doing some searches for the best places to visit for what you want to photograph. Some guide books have great hints and using the internet to focus down to the exact location helps. Use photography apps and/or sunrise-sunset tables so you know the time of day and get to your location early. Have an idea of the settings you need to capture the photo you envision. In this case, I knew I needed a faster shutter speed to freeze the wave action and a step-down aperture for focus. Know the rules of the location, as I stated above this particular beach is locked up at 7 PM each night (also mentioned in the guide books) and they will not wait for you even if they see your car on the road (the road is over an old lava bed so slow going over bumps and holes). Be alert to what is going on around you and maybe luck will be on your side and you'll get that once in a lifetime photo. The moment you take the shot you freeze the past, never to be exactly the same again. We have been to this beach many times and it's never the same so keep alert, be prepared, and enjoy the moment.
