Location
Cliffs of Moher County Clare IrelandTime
Cliffs of Moher are on the western side of Ireland so weather permitting this is an excellent spot for sunset. We arrived late afternoon with several hours before sunset. We parked on the north side by the visitors center and headed up the steps to cliff path. This path gives an unobstructed view of the ocean and can be tricky to walk if the wind is blowing.Lighting
It was a hazy day so the light was slightly diffused. No wind to speak of so the sea was extremely calm. The sun was low enough to get a beautiful golden glow on the cliffs and reflected off the water.Equipment
I travel with my Canon EOS 5D Mark III; lens used: EF17-40mmm; Gitzo travel tripod GT1541T; Really Right Stuff quick release tripod head and L plate; Bower wireless shutter release.Inspiration
The Cliffs of Moher are a famous landmark and Ireland's most remarkable natural feature. This was our first visit here and I wanted to capture the serenity and natural beauty of the cliffs. There are two paths on the top, one higher and one lower. The lower one gave me a better perspective of the grasses and O'Brien's Tower in the background.Editing
I setup the camera to bracket seven photos and then processed them in Photomatix Pro using Lightroom5 as my main photo catalog. After processing and bringing it back into Lightroom5 I sharpened the photo in Sharpener Pro 3: Output Sharpener. In my camera bag
I always travel with the 24-105mm lens. I probably take 80% of all travel photo's with this lens. ND filters, Canon 320EX Speedlite, lens cleaning kit, bubble level all packed in a Think Tank photo bag.Feedback
For sunset pictures you really need to know when the sun will set and to plan accordingly. There are several apps that can help or check the local weather report on line. If you've never been to the location plan extra time for scouting the area. Parking is by the Visitors Center and since time was limited we just walked north so we could see O'Brien's Tower and then continue along the path. As we were there in September we did not have the hordes of tourists and any tour buses had left for the day so I was able to get clean shots with few or no random tourists in them. For the foreground I liked the grasses growing so lush on the hillside the tower for mid and the sun and horizon for the far. I wanted you to feel like you are sitting on the hillside looking out.
