Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the North Pier of the Grand River Channel in Grand Haven, MI

Time

It was taken at 6:03 PM EDT Saturday January 23, 2016. The sun had set about 15 minutes before and this was the afterglow.

Lighting

The lighting for the shot was what Nature provided. The exposure settings were 1/600s, f4.5, ISO 900

Equipment

The camera is a Nikon D3300, the lens is a DX AF-S Nikkor 55-200 mm (which I have since replaced with a Sigma 18-300 mm DC Macro lens), the tripod I have is a Vangard Alta Series. I use an infrared remote shutter with this.

Inspiration

I enjoy landscape and wildlife photography. I have not had formal training in photography other than what I read in magazines and books, which I then attempt to put into practice. I enjoy taking sunset photos and living by Lake Michigan provides opportunities for me to practice this.

Editing

This photo has not had any post-processing . I rarely do any post-processing and any I do is limited to what the ViewNX 2 software that came with the camera can do. That post-processing is limited to increasing/decreasing the exposure setting, sharpening of the image (as little as needed), and cropping of the image.

In my camera bag

My equipment consists of the D3300, Sigma 18-300 mm lens, a circular polarizing filter, and a HGX Variable ND filter

Feedback

To capture sunset photos you need a clear unobstructed view of the western sky such as overlooking a lake or a large open field. Also have an object of interest such as a pier/lighthouse, barn, unique tree, or anything that will give more dimension to the shot. Watch how you compose the shot with respect to you object of interest. You usually will want it to add interest but not dominate the shot. For sunrise photos the same advice is used except to have a view to the east.
